Christian Wille is 28 years old and a trainee in the purchasing/merchandise department at EDEKA headquarters. After completing a bachelor's degree in business administration in Düsseldorf, he studied a master's degree in business administration, specializing in supply chain management, in Cologne. In the interview he explains why he decided on a trainee program at Edeka.
Why a trainee program and not direct entry? Where do you personally see the advantages?
The trainee program is the ideal start to my career for me. I get the chance to work in different departments, receive individual support and can build a company-wide network.
How did the selection process go and what advice do you have for applicants who still have to go through it?
The selection process consists of an online test, a telephone interview lasting approximately one hour and an assessment center. In addition to good preparation, it is important to stay natural and not pretend.
Edeka trainee in purchasing: What different tasks are part of your everyday work?
My tasks as a trainee are versatile and varied. They range from evaluating offers and creating market analyzes to negotiating prices and products with suppliers.
Do you primarily sit in the office or do you also travel a lot?
Of course, everyday working life takes place primarily in the office. But work also includes meeting with suppliers, attending trade fairs and tasting products. So there is enough variety.
Is there anything that you find particularly exciting, something that perhaps even surprised you?
I find the work on our own brands particularly exciting. From the idea to the development of taste and quality to the selection of the supplier, you are involved in the entire process. When your “own” product is available to buy on the market, it’s a great feeling.
What three qualities should you have as a purchasing trainee?
As a purchasing trainee, you should have strong communication skills, assertiveness and, above all, a lot of enthusiasm for the products.
After the trainee program: What should you ideally do next, where do you want to go professionally?
After the trainee program, I would like to work at the EDEKA headquarters as a buyer - preferably in the own brands area. I find it incredibly exciting to help design a product and support it from the ground up.
Edeka's slogan is “We love food”. Which one do you particularly love and what makes you “weak”?;)
I feel the same way as I'm sure many others do. I just can't say no to chocolate. :)
